Project Aim

  • To help Welsh companies understand the financial, environmental and social benefits of ecodesign practice
  • To support the Welsh Government with their sustainability objectives as well as transferring global ecodesign best practice to Welsh Government departments for the purposes of policy strategy documentation
  • To further embed ecodesign as best practice in design education for Welsh universities

Note: The Program of Work is the Centre of Expertise (CoE) contract, a 1-year extension from the previous 3-year contract which ran from 2008-2011.

EDC’s Involvement

EDC is hosting a series of events for Welsh companies to develop awareness of environmental, financial and social benefits of implementing ecodesign practices. This awareness raising is supported by the publication of a series of informative ecodesign newsletters.

Through the Program of Work EDC is collaborating with the Waste Strategy Branch (WSB) of the Welsh Government, assisting in the development of the Towards Zero Waste (TZW) strategy. To support this campaign EDC is also collaborating with the Waste & Resources Action programme (WRAP) on waste minimisation through design and Constructing Excellence in Wales (CEW) on the issue of problematic waste in the construction sector.

EDC actively supports the Welsh Government to deliver its sustainability objectives by informing policy preparations through information on ecodesign and global sustainability best practice.

The Program of Work also enables EDC to support the Welsh Universities in further embedding ecodesign in design education through undertaking a review of the current situation and developing additional teaching resources.

Key Project Outcomes

EDC will:
  • Seek active participation of 30 Welsh companies in six events, to increase the awareness of ecodesign benefits and promote the effectiveness of a more prominent sustainability strategy in terms of economic, social and environmental advantages
  • Develop and distribute a series of informative newsletters to a minimum of 100 companies with design capacity in Wales
  • Support the Welsh Government in developing policies and action plans to achieve its sustainability objectives
  • Further embed ecodesign as best practice for design education in Welsh universities

What we've been writing about.

  • material matters

I gave this presentation last week at Orangebox to update them on my PhD research progress, which they support. It proposes a framework for formalising material selection strategies.
