Impact 2008 Creative Conference

EDC were invited to present at Caledonian Creates inaugural conference, Impact 2008 held 17 June 2008. The conference brought together speakers from throughout the UK to discuss the impact of, and their involvement in, the Creative Industries.

The diverse range of topics discussed ranged from computer games through to design-led urban regeneration. The conference also highlighted the vital importance of the creative economy in the UK.

EDC delivered a presentation entitled “Is ecodesign really good design?”. The presentation explored what ecodesign means in practice, drawing on recent experiences of working with a range of stakeholders including design educators, manufacturers and designers along with presenting some international examples of best practice.

EDC highlighted potential reasons for the ongoing conflict between ecodesign and ‘traditional design’ including viewing ecodesign as an optional extra and not considering the true life cycle costs. The presentation clearly made the case for ecodesign being good design and good business practice and highlighted the many opportunities that exist for the creative industries to embrace ecodesign practice.

The conference formed part of the Caledonian Creates exhibition, which showcased the creative output from Glasgow Caledonian University. The 2008 exhibition included student work from Interior Design, Product Design, Graphic Design, Audio Technology, Multimedia, Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing, Games Design, Digital Media and Journalism.
