Potential of Market Pull Instruments for Promoting Innovation in Environmental Characteristics Report

EDC and Global Laser were interviewed and cited as an example of best practice as part of a study on the Potential of Market Pull Instruments for Promoting Innovation in Environmental Characteristics commissioned by the Directorate-General for the Environment (DG Environment).

DG Environment is one of more than 40 Directorates-General and services that make up the European Commission. Its main role is to initiate and define new environmental legislation and to ensure that agreed measures are put into practice in the European Union Member States.

The study was conducted by COWI A/S in collaboration with Ecotec Ltd. It provided an enhanced understanding of the extent to which demand pull instruments promote innovation along with investigating the assumption that greater demand leads to greater innovation. The report was aimed at EU, regional and national policy instruments, with a focus on environmentally advantageous innovation.

The study was based on the outcome of an extensive literature review; nearly 40 interviews conducted with industry representatives across a total of six industrial sectors (IT/consumers electronics, household appliances, transport sector, construction industry, pulp and paper industry and detergents), business associations, researchers and a workshop.

Eight interviews were carried out with representatives of, or experts in the electronics sector. EDC and Global Laser were part of the selected group along with Sony, Philips Consumer Lifestyle, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Intellect and SPRU
