EDC were delighted to get an invite to become an advisor to the Design Management Europe (DME) Award Category ‘Award for the best implementation of a design strategy for sustainability’.
Co-ordinated by Darragh Murphy, from PDR (UWIC), the DME award includes severn different categories and winners were selected by an international jury of experts in business and design management from Europe and the US.
Crucially, the DME Award is concerned with HOW design and innovation are fostered in organisations and not just with WHAT is created. This year, the award had 124 entries from 20 different countries. All entrants were asked to submit a poster display to communicate how design is integrated into their business, how they manage it and the benefits that have been made.
Following an extensive review of the applicants in the assigned category Dr. Frank O’Connor, EDC Director, did a short presentation to advise the jury on the merits of each of the candidate’s submissions. EDC did not have a vote, our role was to inform the jury of the issues addressed by the entrants in the context of a design strategy for sustainability. Emphasis was placed upon:
- the balance between people, profit and planet
- the need for a holistic life cycle perspective reflecting true costs
- clear evidence of sustainability being built-in to the business model and not just an optional add-on.
To find out who the winners are the DME Award 2008 Ceremony will be held in the Wales Millennium Centre on the 13th October 2008.
