Jane Davidson (AM) Stresses that Ecodesign is the Way Forward
Jane Davidson AM, Minister for the Environment, Sustainability and Housing has recently expressed the benefit that ecodesign can bring to Wales and her continued support for the Ecodesign Centre Wales in a speech given in the 'Waste in Wales' - Welsh Waste Networking Conference 2008. Davidson stated that the Welsh Assembly Government will continue to support Ecodesign Centre Wales for the next three years.
During the conference the Minister gave an update on Waste Policy and Regulation in Wales. Sustainable production and end-of-life management were identified as being key. Jane Davidson stated:
“We need to ensure that Welsh businesses produce goods in as resource efficient way as possible. We also need to ensure that throughout their life, and when they are disposed of, their environmental impact is minimized......Ecodesign is the way forward in this regard”.
As well as sustainable production, sustainable consumption was discussed: “We also need to ensure that we only buy resource efficient goods and services. Of course the public sector has an important role to play here”.
The Minister continued: “We will need to make sure that the right mix of levers are in place in Wales to help businesses retain a competitive edge in a market place that is placing ever greater demands for more environmentally friendly goods and services”.
